Sparkly DIY Birthday Card

{ make it don't text it }

"Happy Birthday" - card stock, blank card, acrylic paint, gold glitter, three clear tiny gemstones, typed and printed "Happy Birthday", scissors, foam tape, craft glue.

Using a small piece of card stock, cut a frame, paint with black the inside of it, leaving .25 inches of white framed space around the edge. Below, I painted the white framed space with blue's and aqua's. Once this is dry, I outline the black paint with craft glue and glitter it gold.

...let dry...

Using a small (4.75" x 6.75") rectangle (to fit size of card) card stock, I brush strokes of black, blue, aqua, gray and gold (same paint I used for the frame) - from top to bottom

wait for the paint to dry, then glaze some glue over the gold streaks and glitter gold to match the frame...let dry...

While waiting paint three "sparkles" on the frame, adhering small gemstones in the center of the 'sparkle' ...let dry... add four small pieces of foam tape to the underside and place it centered on the 'streaked' small rectangle.

Place the printed "Happy Birthday" inside the frame and secure with glue.

DONE. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. SO SPARKLY.

DIY, under $5, under 7 min (including dry time,) and 1-2-3 level easy-ness-yes.

To begin. Supplies: All those bottles of wine consumed last night while stressing out about hosting Thanksgiving dinner have come in handy: CORKS. • glue gun • scissors • string/yarn • colored & black cardstock • sharp knife • black pen • black paint & paint brush

snip the corks in half

paint the 1/2 corks black

while the corks are drying...plug in the glue gun... cut the colored card stock into tiny squares. with black pen, draw a smaller square in the center (this is the pilgrim hat 'buckle')

punch the desired amount of black card stock circles (1.5" diam)

paint should be dry, begin dabbing glue to the black circles and adhering the cork (flat side down) - take the string/yard and wrap around the bottom of the cork, closest to the circle. Adhere with a dab of hot glue and press the 'hat buckle' onto the excess glue to secure string.

Slit the top of the hat with a knife, inserted the name of guest.

1-2-3-E-Z-est 7 minutes (8 including clean-up.)

i was unable to attend a favorite friend's benchmark (forever22) birthday... so instead, I made (& glittered) a personal decorative banner...put it in the mail, and sent my love.

1) begin with sketch - choosing colors, textures, etc

2) paint each letter on the white card stock, let dry, add embellished glitter, let dry part 2

3) cut out letter/shape

4) adhere to black construction paper (8" x 10") with foam tape, hole punch top of paper (2x) and string upppppppaaahhhh

5) put in mail 6) your fabulous friend receives package / decorates her NYC appt. with bday garland made with time, love, representing years of sincere friendship (photo sent from friend - elated to have a festive birthday home)

...from sketchbook to studio to store to you...

this floral collection was brought into creation with a little flowery inspiration:

beginning with paintbrush and scissors, i transfer to photoshop via scanner...then the mass-marketable design begins its birth:

i clip out some painted area in flower shape (as per my sketch) this will be the bottom layer of my flower.

i follow same procedure with my pink paint...cutting it out and placing it on top of my bottom layer.

i do the same with a yellow painted piece. cutting it out in similar floral shape, but much smaller. I add a collection of small orange dots in the center. Flower #1 Complete. I do this with multiple colors to create multiple flowers. there we go.

begin pattern: place a few flowers on my white canvas.

place a few more, covering the white canvas, while respecting white space.

it feels patternized and spacially appropriate

i choose a chocolate background. correct. my designs are inspired by my indulgences.

...i design with more excitement...correct. my designs always need sparkle.

in the beginning: the idea and sketch

to make: 1) snip black paper (construction / cardstock) into bat shapes (i did three per 8.5 x 11 sheet)

2) sparkle the eyes (droplets of red paint with red glitter)

3) dust the excess glitter off to reveal (now) creepy bat

4) after the creepy bat's eyes dry, hole punch two holes on the thickest part of the wing or body (i alternated)

5) connect the bat attack by stringing thin WIRE through the pre-punched holes...

6) place them creeping up a wall, hallway, etc.

i present u: fang garland.

i hung the bloody fangs (no profanity here) in a black-background-matted antique frame, adhering googly-eyes on the top-end for the cute monster effect - halloween home decor.

i also hung the bloody fangs (stop it) over the mantle. oh. spooky.

in the beginning: it began with the typical middle-of-the-night-sketch. in the dark. sketchy.

to make: 1) take white card stock and snip and slice into long, thin triangles (keep the sizes roughly around .25"- 1" wide and no more than 3" long)

since we will be using baker's twine, 2) hole punch with a 1/16" tool. give two holes across from each other on the thick, flat end of the triangle.

3) get sloppy with red paint on the narrow end of the triangle. 4) weave the baker's twine (or thread or whatever stringiesting u so want to use) through the holes of about 12 bloody fangs. (seriously.) This will create the fang garland. see below.

use a small cello bag (4" wide - top to bottom) and cut out the super cutsie spooky label i made for you (2 up) fold it in half over the open part of the cello bag and staple it closed. SEE?

this oh-so-sweet gift tote (and giftwrap, card, tag, etc collection) was collaboratively birthed by hunger pain, broken pencil, no eraser, tea-stained paper scrap and, of course, some digital magicalness.

i begin with the typical barely-can-understand-JK-sketch-scratch-trash-scan-into the computer artwork. Since my sketches were such poor quality, I decided to redraw them on the computer screen.

by digitally redrawing them, i can manipulate the sketchiness, and make each 'treat' recognizable

i add color after i am satisfied with the drawing

... i do this to all the sweetnesses of the the sweet treats...

then i give them design into an all over print pattern

...and another one...

...preparing backstage at a little shoot...

...front and center in the lights camera action zone...

Happy Easter decorating. A quick, simple & entertaining way to get the kids involved at the egg decorating table this year requires a few gemstones, cotton puffs, sharpies, googly eyes, construction paper, yellow feathers and a hot glue gun. Color the hard boiled eggs, then let the kids create their characters. I did a few here (duck, frog, chick, bunny) for inspiration.

Great for snacks this week too. Everyone loves a healthy-DECORATED treat in the lunch box. :)

What you need: 5 x 7 card stock blank gift cards with envelopes, printed paper, recycled paper (brown kraft,) glitter, die-cut hole punches, glue, foam stickers, scissors, ribbon, computer/printer.

I began by cutting my floral design into 3 x 3 in squares, and die-hole punched the recycled craft in 2.5" circles. Printed out the letter "U" for Ullyott (friend's last name) on 1.5" circles that were designed on the computer. Hole-punched the letters with a 1.5" die-circle.

Placed the glue on the "U" only. It is important to saturate the glue with a small pile of glitter.

Brush off the glitter, and the "U" is ready to be positioned.

Paste the floral square paper on the folded card. Glue the kraft circle in the center of that square. Place a small foam stickie square adhered to the freshly sparkled "U." Let dry.

I completed 12, wrapped the set with ribbon and presented it to my friend.

For the past fifteen Christmases, my father has asked me to make an outdoor manger scene for our easement. This Christmas, WE finally did it.

A tragic loss last Christmas left me emotionally crippled, refocusing and tightening the definition of my family's crucial role in my life. The sacrifices each member made (including our giant poodle, Shadrack) to provide support, love, and morale furnished me with the energy to get this holiday prop completed. Fueled by an intense supply of love and overwhelming thanks to my dad, Christmas 2010 signified the completion of a fifteen year vision.

It became a family project; everyone helping (including my precious younger sister who is legally blind.) Finished size is about 9.5 ' x 5.5 ' painted with acrylics, sparkle, and coated with a gloss varnish.

Today, you get a glimpse into my little world of creating a gift wrap pattern.

Love giving.

Before each design, I visualize the receiver of a gift, the smile, the tenderness, the embrace. The physical representation of an internal, emotional language so sweet and utterly human.

Give loving.

1) I begin with hand drawing my design. This specific design was painted free-hand with acrylic and detailed with water-proof marker.

2) I scan my pieces in, and arrange them on the computer screen.

3) It needed some dots. I add dots. Maybe a cute ribbon around the candy canes to bring another element into to print.

4) I add a color background and some candy wrappers.

5) I bring the piece to life with texture and some clean sparkles.

Complete: When it feels good, it is finished.

the idea took shape. cut small triangles in the paper, which i strung together with white twine. printed "the greatest" on card stock. punched holes in top of paper, and looped the twine through. securing it with a knot on the backside of the 'card'

The typical, greenish plastic with felt-like material earring holder was not to my liking...so I printed my "diva" design on cardstock, added "for the birthday girl" punched two small holes for the earrings, and adorned the paper with the fresh, new pair. And, St.Renee looked glamourous as always.

With email, text, tweet, facebook, one has to be deliberate in staying in non-internet contact with dearest of the dears! The artistry of a handwritten note will return to my life this 2010. -JKD

I begin with the sketches. Dressing my models, adding accessories...

The stylist lays out the initial drawing. The photographer sets up the angle. I notice the red gift is too tall. The white gift was meant to be tied long-wise (it's done-up short.) The drawing will have to be manipulated...and that red box is bulging!

Swap, angle, squish, color correct...And finally, the shot is good. Take 5. -JKD

A fun painting...but the turquoise bird seems to be missing!

Other than suffering from food poisoning the evening before thru night of, I had a blast preparing for the shower/party and the most important part: the bride-to-be & her guests had a FABULOUS time.

For the Bridal Shower / Weekend extravaganza I am planning, I have been decorating with felt heart garland...and decided to give each guest one of their own.

I began with the sketch...then decided felt and ribbon will be the ingredients.

Four easy Steps: 1) Cut felt into hearts 2) Slit inside center twice 3) Slip ribbon through 4) Slip ribbon through as many hearts as you want, and the garland begins to take shape! Package.

I created a cute little package...PS-the theme is Sex & the City...Bride's name is Kristi.

The heart garland will be perfect for Valentine's Day decor! -JKD

My friend is celebrating her special birthday at the spa in Napa Valley. It's been rainy & dark...and I want to present her something that is cheery, yet reflects the tranquility of the spa-celebration.

I love the gift. Gold wire wraps two onyx jewels and wraps around as a long necklace, or multiple times as a choker. I think she will love it. I want her to love the presentation as well; a meaningful impression.

I narrowed down my choices...all are premium wraps from Italy. The shine is not foil...it's metalized - yes, a big difference. :) (Jillson&Roberts)

I love the serenity of the springful green mixed the confident of the royal blue tones. It's ready to be opened. -JKD

DIY - Earring & Necklace Display

I need to see the palette I am working with...as much as possible, or I forget about it. I had my earring "palette" displayed on a beautiful, wire tree. This proved to be more decorative than functional. To use my small space more effectively, without losing the "decorative" element, I decided to use wall mounted frames. The total cost was $11. I discovered two shadow boxes on clearance because the glass was broken. Little did the retailer know: I was going to purchase perfect ones and break the glass myself... :)

I purchased two of the "destroyed" clearance frames: silver & gold. The earrings can secure themselves, and the necklaces are dangled from pearl pins. Keeps things organized, untangled, clean, and visible!

Target, Aaron Bro's, Home Goods and Craig's List are my favorite shopping experiences for frames. Also, open frames work well with this project (just a little more work.) Wrap corkboard (measured & cut to fit) with your favorite fabric pattern, and secure it into the open frame. -JKD
